Obscured Beauty

Obscured Beauty

It's sometimes frozen.

Cold mornings
seem to freeze time
and also freeze my thinking,
thus bringing my life to a halt,
or even worse start moving
the gears of time backwards,
toward rose-colored memories
when happiness seemed effortless.

It's hard for me to imagine
a much warmer world
during these cold, dark days
of boiling pots,
lights on a timer,
and icy sidewalks
taunting me to step outside.

It's not my job
to lengthen the days
or to warm this Earth.
I'll let someone else worry,
as I've come here to remind
myself and others
of the extraordinary beauty
often obscured by darkness.

As far as we can discern,
the sole purpose of human existence is
to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.
Carl Jung
