A Good Smoke

A Good Smoke

Time to live a little.

What a marvelous thing
for me to witness:
someone enjoying a cigarette
more than I've enjoyed
all of my personal successes
from school until now.

Striving,
pushing and pulling,
climbing,
have only taken me
to a greater height
from which I must fall
in order to recover
the joyful humanity
some find so easily
in a good smoke.

I met the surgeon general -
he offered me a cigarette.
