The Heart of the Matter

The Heart of the Matter

...is often existential.

There's always a word or two
spoken by the voice in my head
that can summon an idea
right at the heart of the matter,
thus causing me to start listening.

Today my voice
grabbed my attention asking,

What is it you fear?

I paused
before responding timidly,

Suffering.
I don't want to suffer.

. . .

Then,
as I let go of my focus,
in the distance I heard Jesus
calling out to Lazarus,

Come forth!
Come forth!

And so he did.

When you take your attention into the present moment, a certain alertness arises. You become more conscious of what's around you, but also, strangely, a sense of presence that is both within and without.
~ Eckhart Tolle
