The Veil Lifted

The Veil Lifted

...for a brief moment.

For a brief moment
I noticed the veil lifting,
seeing spirits approaching
with gifts to share.

But I reacted too fiercely
and frightened them away.

The veil has now fallen,
and I can no longer hear
their whispering voices,
or see their shadows.

I said nothing,
but my heart leapt out,
desperate and rapacious,
calling out wildly:

Tell me what to do
with the rest of my life!

Death is the veil which those who live call life;
They sleep, and it is lifted.
~ Percy Bysshe Shelley
