Preacher Man

Preacher Man

...all fire and brimstone...

As a young man,
I would often play
the part of a preacher,
all fire and brimstone,
and just about as certain
as the day is long.

But I wasn't even remotely aware,
as I stumbled along in darkness,
how near I'd come to the precipice,
nor of all the horrors I'd avoided
by nothing more than dumb luck.

Now initiated,
I can see that any man
not willing to yoke his passion
to a healthy fear of God
is likely to wreak havoc
under the guise of free will.

(When you see my dad
you might want to thank him
for his time in the seminary.

His sojourn in the priesthood
almost certainly spared this world
from me becoming a preacher.)

I have so many opinions about everything
it just comes out during my music.
It's a battle for me. I try not to be preachy.
That's a real danger.
