Be Released
Be Released
...of everything.
I can empathize.
I know the desperate feeling
of being trapped in a moment,
with no answers or assurance
of an easy way out.
I could tell you the story
about a crisis at my office
requiring an armed guard
to secure the main entrance.
Or I could speak of divorce,
sitting alone in my apartment
listening to the passing traffic
oblivious to my suffering.
Throughout it all
the Earth kept turning,
each day followed by night,
as these and other crises
would come and go.
. . .
Tell me,
when at a funeral,
have you ever dared
to look more closely
at the corpse?
Don't they appear
to be more at peace
than during the struggle
to continue in this life?
I truly believe
it must be this way,
because there is always,
and without exception,
a much greater peace
in letting go.
Death is a release from the impressions of the senses,
and from desires that make us their puppets,
and from the vagaries of the mind,
and from the hard service of the flesh.
~ Marcus Aurelius
